The Place: LaHave Bakery, Mahone Bay
The Treasure: Artisan breads, tasty treats, ready for the oven dinners, lunches, and excellent service.
I can’t think of a better way to relaunch our site than with the place that has fed us on every weekend for half a year.
LaHave Bakery sits on the right side (as you look at it) of the Old Station. It’s a small shop but it’s what’s inside that counts.
Bread. Lots of bread. Lots of varieties of breads. Including: Cheese bread, milk and honey, cracked pepper, and potato.
At least once a week Steph and I have our lunch there. They make the sandwiches or pizzas as you order them which gives you time to sit and take in the town a little.
Some of the sandwiches they offer are: Breakfast panini, grilled cheese and tomato, meatball sub, avocado melt, pulled pork, and salmon bagel.
Their pizzas are personal sized. The two we’ve tried are Hawian and vegetarian.
They also offer terrific seasonal food. Naturally turkey dinner was on the menu for Thanksgiving as well as pumpkin pie.
Another offering of the bakery is it’s selection of hand made treats. Including: Carrot cake squares, blueberry pies, rhubarb pies, nanimo bars, Molly bars, chocolate truffles, and sticky buns
And my personal, must have, favourite: butter tarts. I’m a butter tart fiend. The pastry is nice and flaky. The crust on the top that holds the almond slivers is a nice dark brown and the filling is just right. Soft enough that it flows, but doesn’t spill. And the taste? Oh.. best butter tarts I’ve had to date, and I’ve sampled a fair amount!
The bakery will also make you a cake, like the one Steph got me for my birthday. It’s a lemon angel food cake style inside with a layer of icing between them, covered in a meringue with raspberries and almond slivers on top. A beautiful cake that tastes better than it looks.
If you find yourself in or near Mahone Bay, and your stomach growls, you have to go to LaHave Bakery and try their sandwiches… and a butter tart.
