Sleigh rides!
Okay got your attention? Because everyone should experience a sleigh ride in their lifetime. If you don’t like the winter weather as much be sure to go for a wagon ride instead during the warmer months.
Ross Farm Museum sits in New Ross on the wonderful South Shore. It features about 60 acres of something close to 800 acres granted to Captain Ross in the 1800’s.
On our last trip there we decided to walk the trails instead of taking the wagon ride. It gave us a better chance to stop and look at the changes since our previous visit, including a new (to us) trails through the woods.
After the gift shop, which also sells some of the items made in the blacksmith shop and wood working shop, we went and took a look at the schoolhouse:
Which, naturally, contains period applicable items. A wood stove, slate writing tablets for each student, desks and outfits.
Next we wandered on to see some of the livestock. Sheep, cows, chickens and pigs – in no particular order. The day we went was a particularly warm one so there wasn’t a whole lot of activity from the various animals. Can’t say I blamed them either.
After that we wandered down to the blacksmith shop and talked for a while with the blacksmith, then on to the cooper’s. He’s just gotten back to the shop when we were heading down the trail to the woods, hopefully next time we’ll have a chance to talk to him about his work. Really want to buy a couple of the barrels next time we get out there. They’re beautiful!
The path through the woods has really amazing potential – it wasn’t quite completed when we were there so it’s another reason to go back. Any excuse. 😉
Once we were done the walk back up towards the gift shop we swung over to the Rosebank Cottage which was the original home of the Ross family:
In there we talked to a wonderful lady who let Steph try spinning – something she’s been interested in as long as we’ve been together.
Perhaps the best thing about Ross Farm Museum is the friendliness of all the people on the farm. Always willing to stop and talk about the farm life, what they do and why they do it. Followed closely by the peacefulness of the farm in general.
There were two things we want to get to in the coming year that we couldn’t make it to last year. One is the scything contest (hay mowing) and the other is their farmers’ market featuring produce from the farm itself and from the surrounding area.
