Mahone Bay Scarecrow Festival

The Place: Mahone Bay

The Treasure: Scarecrow Festival

Last year we had a chance to take in the Scarecrow Festival in Mahone Bay so this year we’re writing an article to promote it before it happens – a Nova Scotia Treasures first! 🙂

Scarecrow Festival takes place from September 30th to October 2th . Most of the businesses and many of the residence put out scarecrows of various kinds. Some historical figures, some fictional characters, some made up from their creative minds.

A list of events during the festival can be found here:  Scarecrow Festival

One of the highlights is the pumpkins being placed on the top of Jo-Ann’s. They also carve hundreds of pumpkins (without using a pattern) for the night walk. Afterwards the pumpkins will be on sale with the proceeds going to the festival.

It’s a very popular event and draws tourist from all over. Last year the royal family showed up for it!

Mahone Bay’s festivals always have a wonderful community feel to them and this one is no exception. With the fall colours starting, the weather warm enough to be out but cool enough to be comfortable, the scarecrows add another reason to walk the streets of this tourist town.

And don’t forget about the famous three churches!
